Ellipticals have become very popular because they provide the same cardio workout as running, but their smooth, gliding motion means there is virtually no impact to knees and ankles. In fact, since your feet do not leave the platforms, you can also get a workout much like a stepper. Decreasing resistance allows the fast pace of a run, while increasing it provides a strength workout like a stepper.
